Sedecordle vs Octordle, Quordle and Wordle: what's the difference?

Sedecordle is Wordle played on sixteen boards at once with 21 guesses. Quordle uses four boards and 9 guesses, Octordle eight boards and 13 guesses, and plain Wordle one board and 6 guesses. They all follow the same coloring rules; what changes is how many words you chase with each guess, and how little room there is for a wasted row.

The whole family in one table

Multi-board Wordle games all build on the original, and most follow one simple formula: the number of guesses is the number of boards plus five.

The spare guesses stay at five while the boards keep doubling, so each extra board makes the game tighter. In Wordle you can waste a guess on every row and still win. In Sedecordle five wasted guesses, across all sixteen boards, end the game.

What stays the same

  • The colors. Green means the right letter in the right spot, yellow means the letter is in the word somewhere else, and gray means it isn't in that board's word. Repeated letters follow the same rule as Wordle.
  • One guess for every board. Each word you type is entered on every board that isn't solved yet, and each board colors it against its own hidden word.
  • Solved boards stop. Once you guess a board's word it is finished and takes no more guesses.

What changes as the boards multiply

Openers do more work. One guess on sixteen boards gives sixteen sets of colors, so a strong opening word is worth far more in Sedecordle than in Wordle. That's why we spend a whole article on the best starting words.

Planning beats speed. In Quordle you can often solve boards as they come. In Sedecordle you need a plan for the guess budget: a few openers, then the clear boards, then the hard ones. Our strategy guide breaks that plan down.

The keyboard needs more detail. With one board, a key is simply green, yellow or gray. With sixteen, every key here shows a tiny 4×4 map with one square per board, so you can see at a glance which boards still need a letter.

Games take longer. A Wordle takes two or three minutes. A Sedecordle usually takes ten to twenty, which is part of the appeal for players who find a single board too quick.

Which one should you play?

  • Wordle if you want one quick puzzle a day.
  • Quordle if you like the multi-board idea but want a short game.
  • Octordle for a solid challenge that still fits in a coffee break.
  • Sedecordle if Octordle has become comfortable and you want planning to matter as much as vocabulary.
  • Duotrigordle if you want a marathon.

Moving up one step at a time works well. The habits from Octordle, like fixed openers and solving clear boards first, carry over directly; Sedecordle mostly asks you to apply them more strictly.
