Credits and Licenses

Our word lists and meanings are built from open data. Thank you to everyone who maintains these projects.

Word frequency

Answers are chosen by frequency using FrequencyWords by Hermit Dave, built from OpenSubtitles 2018. The content is licensed CC BY-SA 4.0. Our derived word lists (the files under /data/words/) are shared under the same license.

Word filters

Offensive words are kept out of the answers using the LDNOOBW lists (CC BY 4.0) plus our own additions. Answers are dictionary base forms: plurals and verb forms are checked with Hunspell, and first names are kept out of German answers with the help of the firstname-database (GNU FDL), which is only used as a filter and not published.

Word meanings

The one-line meanings on answer pages come from the English Wiktionary and are available under CC BY-SA 4.0. Each answer page names Wiktionary as the source.

How we use these sources

A build script downloads each source, filters it to words of 4 to 11 letters that use the language's alphabet, removes blocked words and writes the lists that the game loads. Nothing is fetched from these projects while you play. If you spot a mistake in a word list or a meaning, please let us know so we can fix it and, where it makes sense, report it upstream.

The game

Sedecordle builds on Wordle by Josh Wardle and the many multi-board variants that followed. Sedecordle Wordle is an independent fan game. It isn't affiliated with Wordle or The New York Times.
