How to play Sedecordle
Sedecordle takes the rules of Wordle and multiplies them by sixteen. This guide covers the rules, what the colors mean, the different modes and a strategy that solves all sixteen boards in 21 guesses most days.
The rules
There are sixteen boards, each hiding a different word. You type a guess, and it is entered on every board that isn't solved yet. Each board then colors the guess against its own word. You have 21 guesses to solve all sixteen boards.
Every guess must be a real word from the game's word list. Typing a word that isn't in the list doesn't cost a guess; the row just shakes.
What the colors mean
- Green: the letter is in the word and in this exact spot.
- Yellow: the letter is in the word, but somewhere else.
- Gray: the letter is not in the word, or the word doesn't have that many copies of it.
Repeated letters follow the Wordle rule. If you guess a word with two E's and the answer has one E, only one of your E's is colored. A green match is always counted first.
Reading the keyboard
Each key is split into a 4×4 grid of tiny squares, one per board, in the same order as the boards on screen. A square turns green, yellow or gray when that board has learned something about the letter. Solved boards go blank. A key that is gray on every open board fades out, so you know not to use it.
A strategy that works
- Guesses 1–4: play words with common letters and no repeats, for example AROSE, UNLIT, DUCHY, GIMPY. After these, most boards have only a handful of possible words left.
- Guesses 5–12: solve the easiest boards first. Pick boards where you know four letters, or where only one word fits.
- Guesses 13–21: the boards left now have many clues from all the earlier guesses. When two words still fit a board, choose the guess that also helps another board.
- If you are short on guesses, solve the boards you are sure of before gambling on a 50/50.
Modes
Daily: one puzzle a day, the same for everybody. Practice: unlimited new games. Sedec-order: boards open one at a time, 23 guesses. Savior: the first four guesses are filled in for you. Variations: words from 4 to 11 letters. Archive: every past daily. Custom: your own words, shared by link.
Hard mode can be turned on in Settings before your first guess. In hard mode, every guess must still be a possible answer for at least one board you haven't solved.
Frequently asked questions
How many guesses do you get in Sedecordle?
You get 21 guesses to solve all 16 boards, so there are five spare guesses beyond the sixteen you need at minimum. Every guess is played on every board that is still unsolved. Sedec-order gives you 23 guesses because boards open one at a time, and Savior counts its four ready-made guesses inside the 21.
When does the daily Sedecordle reset?
The daily puzzle changes at midnight in your own time zone, so everyone gets a new puzzle when their day starts. Each language has its own daily puzzle, and every player in that language gets the same sixteen words. A countdown on the end screen shows exactly how long you have to wait.
What is the difference between Sedecordle and Octordle?
Octordle has eight boards and 13 guesses, while Sedecordle doubles it to sixteen boards and 21 guesses. Because you have fewer spare guesses per board, Sedecordle rewards careful opening words and planning more than speed. Both games use the same Wordle colors, and both have daily and practice puzzles.
What do the green, yellow and gray tiles mean?
Green means the letter is in the word and in the right spot. Yellow means the word has that letter, but in a different position. Gray means the letter is not in that board's word, or not as many times as you typed it. Each board colors your guess against its own word.
Is Sedecordle free, and do I need an account?
Sedecordle Wordle is completely free and there is no sign-up. Your games, streaks and settings are saved in your browser on your own device, never on our servers. If you change phones or browsers, use Export stats in Settings and import the file on the new device.
Can I play yesterday's or older Sedecordle puzzles?
Yes. The archive lists every daily puzzle since the first one, with a calendar and a full list of dates. Pick any day to play Classic, Sedec-order or Savior. Archive games have their own statistics, so they never change your daily streak, and each day also has its own answers page.
What is a good starting word for Sedecordle?
Start with words that use common letters and no repeats, and spend your first three or four guesses covering as many different letters as possible. In English, AROSE, UNLIT, DUCHY, GIMPY make a strong opening set. After those guesses, most boards have only a handful of possible words left to choose from.
